First Movie Of The Sun Made

The McMath-Hulbert Ovservatory in Pontiac, Michigan made the first movie of the sun. The observatory, named after one of three founders, Robert R. McMath, housed a new instrument called the Spectroheliokinematograph. This instrument was used to film the sun spots or solar prominences. Solar prominences more commonly called sun spots are filaments which are very dark regions of cool yet dense gas that are held in place by magnetic fields. When they appear on the edge of the Sun, they are brighter than the dark outer space behind them, thus being labeled prominences.
