Dr. Benjamin Gruskin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania patented chlorophyll for the treatment of infections of the bloodstream, infected parts, and for open cuts and wounds. Chlorophyll is the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis in plants. Gruskin suggested that chlorophyll be prepared in a water-soluble form to be applied directly to infected parts, or applied intravenously to the bloodstream. He discovered that infectious bacteria gradually declined and granulation tissue improved when patients were given chlorophyll.
