1952: Upon the death of her father, George VI, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor became reigning Queen and head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As she is also Head of the Commonwealth and Supreme Governor of the Church of England, this made her head of state for about 125 million people.
