1937: American aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator Frederick Noonan were reported missing in the south Pacific. Their Lockheed aircraft disappeared without a trace as they attempted to fly around the world. The U.S. Coast Guard had sporadic radio contact with Earhart as she approached Howland Island, when she reported that she was lost and low on fuel. No signs of the wreckage, Earhart or Noonan were ever found.
