1961: Born Diana Frances Spencer, in Norfolk, England, she married Prince Charles, the son of Queen Elizabeth II, on July 29, 1981. Diana became the first English woman to marry an heir to the British throne in more than 300 years. Her time as princess was marked by turbulence in the royal family, but Diana is best known for her tireless support of international charities, such as the Red Cross and AIDS relief organizations. Her untimely 1997 death in an automobile accident at the age of 34 saddened the world.
