1899: American author Ernest Hemingway was born on this day in 1899. Hemingway used his experiences as a battlefield ambulance driver and a globe-trotting reporter to create works such as
A Farewell to Arms,
Islands in the Stream, and
The Old Man and the Sea. His simple, straightforward language and rugged, disillusioned heroes struck a chord with the post- WWI audience, called the Lost Generation, and still appeal to readers today.
