June 18, 1992: Dr. John Fung, together with two of his colleagues, transplanted the liver of a baboon into a 35-year old man. The procedure took place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the man became the first recipient of a baboon liver. The transplant was necessary because the man was suffering from hepatitis B, which in many cases is fatal. The man did not survive longer than 71 days, dying from a brain hemorrhage, but the transplant advanced the field of xenotransplantation or cross-species transplantation.
